The Remediation of the Liepaja Karosta channel is a necessary precondition for the development of the Liepaja Commercial Port. The project is important not only in Latvia but also outside its borders – purification and bringing order into the Liepaja Karosta Channel will eliminate all pollution sources of water resources and soil, which are a constant threat to human health, flora, fauna, and the surrounding landscape. It will facilitate the development of the Liepaja port and the overall economical development of Latvia.
According to request made by the Ministry of the Environment, “Environmental Projects” Ltd. prepared the feasibility study for the Liepaja Karosta channel remediation project.
Within the framework of the project, an in-depth research is conducted on the current situation at the Liepaja Karosta channel. - The collection of existing cartographic materials (topographic plans, bathymetric and geographic maps and sections, sampling/location of drilling posts done during previous research),
- The analysis of historic pollution, as well as forms of recent pollution and its amount (scope),
- Sampling of mud layer of Liepaja Karosta channel and performing of laboratorial analysis, identifying bentofauna in existing mud and its ecotoxicologic analysis,
- Mud utilization possibilities are determined by classifying mud according to their level of pollution and respectively their form of utilization,
- Exploration and study of explosive objects.
After finishing the research and developing the feasibility study, “Environmental Projects” Ltd will prepare applications for a Cohesion Fund in order to receive technical assistance and investment project financing, as well as write up tasks for the development of purchase documents.
The Project will be carried out from May 13, 2005 till January 13, 2006, and it is financed from the state budget program’s subprogram “Project Preparation, Coordination and Implementation co-financed by the European Union Foundations”. |
