Related to the next impending EU planning period a new national program is being developed "Infrastructure development in NATURA 2000 territories", which will serve as a basis for selection of special areas of conservation and distribution of ERAF funding allocated for the planning period of 2007-2013. For development of the national program a group of the field experts is gathered.

The state enterprise "Vides projekti" has performed assessment of the special areas of conservation according to the nature conservation plans (see here) and case studies on infrastructure of the NATURA 2000 territories (see here). Relying on the case studies made and assuming infrastructure development as a valuable instrument for conservation of nature heritage, criteria for selection of NATURA 2000 territories will be developed, in order to identify the most prioritary NATURA 2000 territories needing infrastructure development for providing the biodiversity conservation.

Up to the time being two expert work group meetings have taken place, the key task was discussion of amendments, opinions and proposals for improvement of the 1st draft of the national program.
