The Institute of Biology Latvia University with support of European Commission "LIFE" Project and Latvian Environment Protection Fund has published the Red Data Book of Latvia. There is information about nearly 1000 rare and endangered species of plants and animals that can be found in Latvia. The project leader and editor in chief of the Red Data Book is correspondent member of Latvian Academy of Sciences, prof., Dr. biol. Gunārs Andrušaitis. In the publication there are data in Latvian and English about biology and distribution of species, are identified main reasons of radical numeral decrease of species amount, as well as suggestions of further research and protection. The descriptions are supplemented by biologist’s Aina Karpa original illustrations and maps with places of detection.
Now there are 5 volumes of Latvian Red Data Book available: Volume 1 – Fungi and lichens (1996.), price 1,50 LVL; Volume 3 – Vascular plants (2003.), price 6 LVL; Volume 4 – Invertebrates (1998.), price 5 LVL; Volume 5 – Fishes, reptiles and amphibians (2003.), price 5 LVL; Volume 6 – Birds and mammals (2000), price 5 LVL.
The Red Data Book is regularly published since 1966, when UNESCO International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources issued the International Red Data Book, in order to protect the species natural genofund and diversity. Now many regions and almost all the world countries form their own Red Data Book or Red Register. The research of the species included in these registers hold even more important position in research of wild nature, because more and more species reach a margin of extinction. The species included in Latvia Red Data Book unfortunately are only partly under the protection of the state and the species list varies from EU demands, though the book is valuable and rich information material about fauna and flora of Latvia.
