Seminar "Brandenburg – Latvia biofuel development and perspectives"

To promote development of unified solutions for shared problems, seminar about aspects of biofuel progress in Baltic Sea region countries was organized in The Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Latvia in April 27. In the center of attention was potential cooperation of Latvia and Brandenburg (federal state of Germany) in the field of renewable energy resources production.

In 15th of April the Biofuel Law has come in force in Latvia and the Cabinet of Ministers is now working out provisions to ensure its practical implementation. At the end of this year biofuel in Latvia will should make at least 2, 75% of total planned fuel amount.

In the seminar Minister of Environment Raimonds Vējonis spoke about Bio-fuels and climate change reduction goals in the Baltic Sea region and Minister of Agriculture Mārtiņš Roze presented strategies for reaching bio-fuels targets in Latvia. Minister for Rural Development, Environment and Consumer Protection of the Federal State of Brandenburg Dietmar Woidke, experts and project managers from Germany, as well as Latvian Fuel traders and producers union representative Jāzeps Barkāns and Dainis Laugalis from "Mežrozīte" Ltd. (one of biofuel producers in Latvia) shared their experience in producing and promotion of biofuel, raw material procurement and manufacturing.

In the European Union biofuel is used not only in agricultural needs, but also in public transportation. Despite of the fact that in Latvia biofuel is cheaper, currently its usage is not wide spread. The production of biofuel will contribute to the growth of national economy: greater areas of rape sowing will raise farmers income, rape processing into biofuel will bring new production unit and development potential for downstream sector and new work places for population of region.

The seminar enabled politicians of Latvia and Brandenburg, biofuel manufacturers and other parties to discuss problems, aims and future possibilities in biofuel manufacturing and utilization. The seminar took place from 10.00 to 15.00 in the Ministry of Environment, in Riga.
