More than 600 Latvian schools have received "A-Energy"DVD, produced in close cooperation between the UN Development Program and "Environmental Projects" Ltd. The DVD was given to teachers of geography and physics at the seminars in Riga and Daugavpils. The seminar "A-Energy" took place in Riga, the Ministry of the Environment, and achieved great responsiveness from teachers. More than 200 teachers from Vidzeme, Kurzeme, Zemgale and Riga took part. Widely attended was also the seminar in Daugavpils for Latgale’s teachers, organized by British Council in December. Together with DVD teachers received also a brochure "A-Energy" written by Anitra Tooma.
The title "A-Energy" can be translated both like "Alternative Energy", which is the primary idea of the authors of the DVD, and "Renewable Energy". There are 7 subjects in DVD (each 10 minutes ) on 7 forms of renewable energy - biomass, the sun, the wind, water, biofuel, biogas and heat pump – with examples of their use in Latvia. In addition there is a "bonus" item on energy saving. In the brochure the meant energy forms are studied in details and there are offered valuable advices for energy saving.
Teachers who could not attend the seminars, could receive both DVD and brochure "A-Energy" in the Public Awareness Department of "Environmental Projects".
Great help in distribution of DVD and brochure was received from the University of Daugavpils and The Centre for Curriculum Development and Examinations (ISEC) of Ministry of Education and Science - the members of the program for teachers of natural sciences / animators. DVD was also distributed in 5 seminars on protection of ozone layer organized by Latvian Agency of Environment, Geology and Meteorology.
