“Environmental Projects” Ltd is a state enterprise supervised by the Ministry of the Environment of the Republic of Latvia. “Environmental Projects” attracts resources from different organizations and financial institutions to solve the environmental problems that are important to Latvia. At the moment “Environmental Projects” is cooperating with the European Union Cohesion Fund, the European Regional Development Fund, the European Union Life Program, and with their continuous cooperation partners , the UN Development Program, Latvian office and the Global Environment Facility.

Within the framework of the enterprise a film production studio (MPS) – the first film production studio in the Baltic States specializing in the production of movies and TV programs about the environment and nature was established. The Film production studio makes a weekly informative analytical television program entitled “Environmental Projects” about the current environmental problems, processes in nature and the human environment in Latvia and in the world. The program has been nominated as the best television program by independent producers on Latvian Television many times. The film production studio also makes documentaries, study and movies for industry.

As a testimony of “Environmental Projects” quality, they acquired a certificate of quality management LVS EN ISO 9001:2000 in 2004. The Certificate confirms compliance of the enterprise's operations to international standards. The enterprise is certified for developing, implementing, managing and supervising environmental projects, as well as educating others with a help of mass media.

Since the beginning of their work in 1997, the enterprise “Environmental Projects” has realized more than 50 projects whose goals have been to improve the environmental situation in Latvia.

Everything accomplished can relatively be divided into five groups:

  • Water management maintenance projects;
  • Waste management projects;
  • Power industry projects;
  • Informative and educating projects for public and specialists;
  • Different economical and constructional projects.

Most significant water management maintenance projects

In 1997 right after establishing “Environmental Projects”, the first work group of the enterprise was formed – project implementation unit “800+”. Seven years ago our country had less than eight hundred water treatment plants and the name of the project implementation unit “800+” reflects that it is necessary to install more than 800 waste water treatment plants, thus improving the quality of surrounding environment. In total, Latvia needs at least 1600 water purification equipments.
Specialists of this group developed water management development strategies for Latvian cities and parishes and conducted monitoring of the implementation of water management reconstruction projects in 11 Latvian municipalities – biological water purification equipments were set up or renovated; iron removal units to remove ironfrom water stations were built; reconstruction and expansion of the water supply and drainage network was carried out in Kuldiga, Saldus, Bauska, Dobele, Aizkraukle, Gulbene, Ainazi, Limbazi, Tukums, Roja and Talsi.

“Environmental Projects” finished water management projects the management of which was led by “800+” unit and “Environmental Project” specialists:

The Technical research of water supply sources in the small towns of Latvia and the evaluation of reservoirs available for exploitation.
The Preparation of technical/economical justifications for the reconstruction of water management in Kraslava city, North Kurzeme parish unions and Vidzeme parish unions.
The Management and monitoring of Daugavpils water management project.
The Preparation of contest documents for Jekabpils and Kraslava water management projects.
The Participation on behalf of Latvia in international and local projects in the field of the water sector coordinated by the Department of Environmental protection at the Ministry of the Environment and Regional Development.
The Supervision of Liepaja, Sigulda, and Madona water management project.

Largest waste management projects

In order to realize a national household waste management program and reduce the number of dumps in Latvia, state enterprise “Environmental Projects” established the implementation unit of a household waste management project. It was given a name ”500-“ as there were about 500 waste dumps in Latvia at that time, and the main task for the project implementation unit was to reduce this number.

The Development of a household and hazardous waste management strategy of Latvia.
The Administering of the Riga household waste management project.
The Development of household waste management system in North Vidzeme region.
Participation on behalf of Latvia in prevention and control of integrated pollution project.
The Development of Liepaja region household management system.
Collecting data about the amount of out-of-date medical products in the institutions of health protection system of Latvia and acknowledging its management process.
Preservation and liquidation of the nuclear reactor in Salaspils, removing radioactive waste and the training of personnel.
Development of a household waste management strategy of North Vidzeme.
Development of a waste management strategy of Middle Latvia.
Development of a waste management strategy for the logistics center of National Military Force of Latvia.

Power industry projects

The Realization of a power industry program supported by the government of the Netherlands. Within its framework the effectiveness of the boiler rooms of Adazi, Ludza, and Lielvarde has been improved and the use of environment friendly heating equipment has been ensured.
The Development of an effective lighting project for requiring funding from the Global Environment Facility.
Research on the useful utilization of wood waste in the Valmiera region financed by the World Bank.
Effective use of wood offcuts in the heating supply systems of Latvian municipalities.
